Giveaways : Zombie Tarot and a Zombie Movie Premier!
Zombie Tarot: Insight and ammunition for Surviving the Undead Uprising
One of the amazing folks I follow on Twitter is the ineffable Stacey Graham.Stacey was discussing her projects on Twitter and I learned of the Zombie Tarot. Released June 5th, this colorful deck has a personality all its own. I've been a zombie genre fan since I saw the original black and white Night of the Living Dead with my mom as a little girl. My Laptop has an "In case of emergency Break Glass" skin on it that I'm frequently complimented on. The fact that mainstream has exploded with zombies makes me giddy. However, I need to figure out who decided that neon green was the "official" zombie color so we can have a chat.
Just holding the box shows you this is no ordinary tarot deck. The lid is emblazoned with the suits of the deck. Instead of Wands, Cups, Pentacles and Swords we have Wands (bones), Swords (machetes), Cups (skulls) and Hazards (the symbol for Biohazard). The cards pictured on the side include the Ace of Wands, the Lovers, Strength, The Star and Justice. It shows the Quirky personality of these cards well. The "In the even of Zombie Attack" directions include statements that assure the reader it can offer advice on things like "Love, family, friendship and automatic firearms."
The box is large enough and sturdy enough I'll store the cards in their box long term. Those of you who read know how hard it is to find a box that will stand up to repeated opening and closing.
The first thing I see as I start to open the box is that the inside (bottom) of the box is designed to look like silver tipped rifle ammo. For those of you who don't know me outside of the Blog, I'm a competition shooter and a firearms instructor. Details like this make me very happy.
The instruction booklet lays inside the box facing up. The face resembling a zombie Jambi the Genie stares blankly up at me with red eyes. The paper inside is aged and has that amazing new Tarot deck smell. When I try out new gimmicky or themed tarot decks, I'll admit I don't expect much. Boy was I wrong. The art by Paul Kepple is sublime. I wouldn't have had it any other way. Paul illustrated another favorite of mine, The Housewives Tarot. You can see the same personality in the cards right away.
As I continue to flip through the book, something strikes me more than the fantastic artwork. The actual tarot itself. The meanings, the spreads and the words behind the artwork. This is a deck a beginner can use, just as easily as an adept. I love that Stacey has included "Understanding Suits and Numbers". It's a part that many students of the Tarot who are self taught miss out on. The spreads created for this deck are fantastic, and will quickly become a part of my regular repertoire.
The cards themselves thinner width wise than some of the decks that have come out in recent memory, which make them easier for me to shuffle. I have long fingers that have been shuffling cards for almost two decades now, and there are still decks that I have a hard time shuffling. The matte finish of the cards is easier on my eyes as well while the muted tones give it an aged appearance that I love.
So which are my favorites? The Emperor looks like Ward Cleaver, (HA! Get it?)
The Fool is a throwback to the cemetery scene in the original Night of the Living Dead.
Anyone who has witnessed the carnage on shows like The Walking Dead can see earning one of these
Let's not forget the (End of The) World.
I've had so much fun playing with these, I'd like to give a set away!
