Don't call us, we'll call you: Gods of Paganism

Recently, through a question and answer website I volunteer for, I received an email from a new convert to Paganism. "I have taken Thor as my God," it started. "I went and bought a Valknut pendant, I think that is his symbol." I see a few things wrong with emails like this. Not the least of which is the fact that there is no question. I love helping others find their way. I do. I do however wonder where people are getting their information when I get questions from those who are changing their allegiance as often as they change their underwear. There is nothing wrong with exploring. We all do it. It is a vital part of finding your spiritual identity. However, there is no reason to swear an oath to someone you just met yesterday. (PS This goes for Covens and working groups as well!) Think of this relationship almost like dating. There are very few times, places and people who would marry someone they just met on their first (blind) date, right? Get to know the Gods. Get to know the culture those Gods originate from. There are Gods and cultures that do not get along. If culture A invaded and conquered culture B, you shouldn’t be invoking them in the same breath. Think of it as you would a party. You wouldn’t invite two people who just underwent a loud bitter divorce to the same party. Gods have a much longer memory. Working with the Gods helps everyone understand that we are a part of Them. That being said let them come to you. The Gods will talk if you can just take the time to listen. Meditate. Often. Learn everything you can about ALL Gods and make an informed choice that will be with you as you grow and develop those relationships. The Gods will come to you if you hold still and wait for them to find you.

It has been my experience that the gods choose who they want to work with--us humans have very little say in the matter. Then again, that may just be my little corner of the universe.
